Hi friends,
It’s Saturday, May 4th, 2024, and we had a spree of nice weather in NYC this week. Here’s all the news that’s fit to newsletter.
next level 5-cup salad
I was thrilled to be joined last week by my friend Chef Gabi Chappel (Epicurious, Next Level Chef) for another trip into the recipe archives, this time making her grandmother’s 5-cup salad.
5-cup salad, sometimes called ambrosia or 24-hour salad, is an easy, light, and affordable dessert that was popular across North America in the 1960s and ‘70s, but has a longer history – it was actually mentioned in Dixie Cookery by Maria Massey Barringer as far back as 1867, so a version of recipe goes back at least that far.
(Since the word is popping up here, this article can tell you more about why the term “Dixie” has fallen out of favor and can have racist connotations.)
Gabi shared that this was something she ate at Gram Chappel’s house growing up, while I’d never had anything like it before.
And, I’ve mentioned it before, but you can and should catch Gabi competing (and kicking total butt!) on Season 3 of Next Level Chef Thursdays on Fox and the day after on Hulu.
cinnamon, cardamom, and earl grey tea (oh my)
Since quitting coffee (because tummy aches) a few months ago, I’ve been drinking a lot of tea. Fortunately, my newly intensified tea obsession led me to finally make something I’d been thinking about for a long time. This week, I’m sharing my recently developed recipe for Earl Grey cinnamon rolls.
I absolutely love these London Fog-ish cinnamon rolls with a bright, floral twist – they’re just right for spring, and easy to make (as long as you have time to wait for them to rise)!
printable recipes, ahoy!
Let’s face it, it’s so much easier to cook from a PDF, so I’m thrilled to share these. Here are my recipes for the aforementioned Earl Grey spice buns, plus the blueberry grunt I made on ProtoCooks last month!
lastly, an instagram giveaway
Whether or not you’re on Instagram, I thought it was only fair to make sure you – my most beloved subscribers – were in the loop on a giveaway I’m doing with my pals at García de la Cruz!
I’m giving away No Expert merch and tons of awesome olive and olive oil products. To enter the giveaway, all you have to do is follow both me and García de la Cruz on Instagram and comment on this post (see post for specific terms and conditions).
and that’s the latest dispatch from my kitchen
Short and sweet – like a sticky bun! More videos coming weekly and more dispatches coming twice a month for the foreseeable.
And one quick recommendation – this video of Tim Russ (Star Trek) explaining Star Wars (poorly) always makes me laugh.
May the 4th be with you (what, you thought I forgot?!),
Can’t wait to try both amazing recipes! You rock!
ahhh so many amazing things in this edition! New recipes, No Expert and García de la Cruz goodies, Gabi, AND a new video???
